Telemedicine

What We Do › Telemedicine

“The reality of practicing emergency medicine in a country such as Georgia, which is characterized by mountainous areas, small cities, and rural villages, is quite difficult. We have developed special tele-consulting software that is a modern, efficient, cost-effective method of providing a high level of critical care support to remote areas.”

Dr. Dito Makhatadze, former Director of the Center for Disaster and Emergency Medicine and the EMS Training Center in Tbilisi, Georgia (Tbilisi (Georgia)/Atlanta (Georgia) partnership).

Telemedicine is defined as the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve patients’ health status. A natural partner to distance learning, telemedicine can be used for educational purposes just as easily as it is used to connect rural and urban physicians for consultation or treatment purposes.

AIHA is committed to providing its partners and other healthcare professionals with a strong foundation of current, evidence-based data, as well as to exploring innovative, cost-effective methods of sharing this information. Information and Communication Technology—the Internet, videoconferencing, e-mail and instant messaging, and other forms of telemedicine—represents an innovative way to bridge distances, cultures, and scientific isolation.

Projects

AIHA’s efforts to improve partner access to telemedicine and other information and communication technolgies through specific programmatic activities include:

Learning Resources Center Project

AIHA’s Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) are designed to enable partners to overcome isolation from information that has discouraged the adaptation of clinical practices to reflect changing international standards of healthcare provision. In addition to providing a direct link to current information sources, LRCs also offer new opportunities for education, communication, and collaboration within the AIHA partnership network, as well as with the international health community.
