Healthy Communities Partnerships

What We DoSubstance Abuse & Dependence › Healthy Communities Partnerships

AIHA’s Healthy Communities partnerships employ time-tested strategies for engaging and empowering individuals to play an active role in maintaining their own health and improving the safety and health status of their towns.

Responding to the needs of people in their service areas, partners offer patient education programs on health topics that pose the greatest threat to people in the communities they serve. Regardless of the challenges they work together to overcome, AIHA’s Healthy Communities partnerships are engaged in a dynamic, energizing process of implementing positive change. Often, the impact of partnership activities spreads to nearby communities thereby improving the health literacy of entire populations.

In Slovakia, for example, AIHA’s Petrzalka/Kansas City (Missouri) partnership focused on preventing alcohol and substance abuse among youth in a district neighboring the nation’s capital city of Bratislava. The Constanta (Romania)/Louisville (Kentucky) partnership trained teens as peer counselors who would teach other young people life skills in an effort to help them avoid high-risk behaviors such as drinking, drug use, and unsafe sexual practices.
