Social Work
What We Do › Social Work
“Historically, social support in the countries of the former Soviet Union is associated with things like picking up pension money or cleaning the house for somebody who is gravely ill. But what we want to do is reshape the mind set of the healthcare community, making them aware of the fact that social programs should not only make life easier, but also enrich the lives of the people they serve.”
Zhanar Kuanysheva, Director of Family Practice Clinic No. 9 in Semey, Kazakhstan, and participant in AIHA’s Community-oriented primary care project.
Wellness is a complex concept because it encompasses not only physical health, but also a wide range of psychological, emotional, social, and economic factors. Social workers can help people deal with a host of concerns from relationships and personal or family problems to inadequate housing, unemployment, or a serious illness or disability.
In a primary care setting, social workers canprovide services and assistance that improves the social and psychological functioning of children, adults, or even entire families.
AIHA’s partnerships and programs have helped expand—and in some cases introduce—the role of social workers by providing hands-on training and a strong grounding in a multidisciplinary team approach to healthcare.
