Family planning and maternal health are important issues at each Women’s Wellness Center, but some have implemented unique programs such as Kiev’s “School for Young Parents,” which provides classes on pregnancy, birth, and neonatal care for couples. Fathers who participate in these classes can take part in the birthing process—a new concept in much of the region.
Staff from the WWC in Kutaisi, Georgia, produced a television program to educate women on topics such as breastfeeding, child care, contraception, and healthy lifestyles, while the Center in Almaty, is home to the only Lamaze School in the Kazakhstan and offers 5-day training programs on family planning for ob/gyns, medical faculty, and family physicians from throughout the nation. And, clinicians from centers in Iasi, Romania; Odessa, Ukraine; and many other communities pursued specialized training in infertility treatments so they could help couples who desperately want a child to conceive and deliver a healthy baby. These are but a few examples of the many reproductive health services offered at AIHA partnership Women’s Wellness Centers throughout Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
