Representatives of the Coney Island Hospital and Odessa Oblast Clinical Hospital (OOCH) participated in the First and Second International Nursing Conferences sponsored by American International Health Alliance (AIHA).

We are proud that the first AIHA Nursing Learning Resource Center (NLRC) opened in OOCH on September 9, 1996.

American experts completed a hospital survey as part of the Infection Control Program. Our nurses actively participated in the implementation of this program. Three conferences were organized locally for nurses of the city and the oblast. We also prepared a set of documents on nursing that were placed on the OOCH Internet server.

We believe that the main components of reform include: leadership and teamwork, administration and management, resource supervision, an information exchange with other partnerships, and research. Areas of focus in nurses' training are: the NLRC on-going training for staff and alternative methods of post-graduate education, the organization of conferences for nurses from the city and region, and development of enhanced clinical skills standards.

CQI initiatives include: staff education, clinical practice, emergency response methods, infection control, critical patient care, and maternal-child care. Infection control is an important measure of quality; we have introduced a nursing infection control committee; and we plan to participate in a PATH program.

We identified professional issues in patient care, including the management of critically ill and post-operative patients, as well as those needing neonatal resuscitation. In our OB/GYN unit we implemented such programs as "Women's Health", "Children of Ukraine", and "Family Planning".

Our motto is "We want to see beyond the horizon"; we are getting ready for the 21st century.
