Significant improvements in maternal and child health have resulted from our participation in the partnership program. Our partners introduced us to classes they hold for new mothers at the Hospital of the niversity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Our midwives now conduct a similar school for young mothers at the Center for Maternal and Child Health Care of the Left Bank, Kiev.
In addition to the school, we offer appropriate classes using video and films. Our classroom is equipped with video, thanks to the efforts of the local AIHA regional office. Our Philadelphia partners have provided educational posters, manuals, and other teaching aids to assist in the development of our maternal and child education program.
Participation in the partnership program also gave us the opportunity to attend the meetings sponsored by American International Health Alliance (AIHA). The international nursing meeting, Developing Nursing Leadership, provided many management tools, including a model for staff recruitment and selection. In selecting staff, we stress business skills, a creative approach to problem solving, and an ability to take a risk for initiating changes in nursing.
Finally, lectures organized by the unit head nurses have resulted in improvements in the quality of patient care.
