Second State Medical Institute is a prestigious organization in which the department of nursing has been redesigned with the support of our US partners and AIHA. The nurse now has a more important role and is a regional member of the health care team. The enhanced role resulted in quality improvements in patient care, new assignments for dietary nurses, and new respect for head nurses. At the same time, we reduced medical staff, increased the number of paramedical personnel and reduced costs. The nurse, in our organization, is the department leader and a high-level professional.

New Methods of Infection Control

A comprehensive infection control program was implemented at Second State Medical Institute in Tashkent. A hospital-wide study resulted in an analysis of the nurse's role in infection control. By working with our US partners, we were able to develop standards for reduction of infection; these standards have been disseminated to other regions of the country.

Reforming Nursing in Uzbekistan

Nursing reforms in Uzbekistan have evolved as a result of the partnership program. Elements of reform include management, curriculum, and role delineation.

By working with our US partners, we were able to promote the professional status of nurses, enhance educational materials, and implement a post-graduate nursing education program. An evaluation of the results of our program proved that our strategy was successful. Our nurses have improved their image, their basic and ongoing education, and they have become real leaders in Uzbekistan.
