An innovative project supported by AIHA and the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health aims to connect each of Kyrgyzstan's six oblast health departments via e-mail and the Internet.
The "KyrgyzMedUz" network will enable the oblasts to collect and disseminate epidemiological and medical information electronically. AIHA will provide each health department with a computer, a printer, and an e-mail/Internet account, while the Health Ministry will provide training to oblast representatives on how to use the network.
The objectives of the "KyrgyzMedUz" network are to help the Kyrgyz Health Ministry to compile morbidity and mortality data into regular reports that can then be sent back to the oblasts, as well as to compile an annual statistical handbook. The network will also support efforts by the health departments to create a national cancer registry. With links to local hospitals and centers for continuing medical education, the network's communications centers will improve the availability of current clinical information to health care providers throughout Kyrgyzstan. "The KyrgyzMedUz project will allow health care institutions in Kyrgyzstan to embark on a qualitatively new level of information technology," noted T. Abdraimov, first deputy minister of health of Kyrgyzstan.
