Health Management Education

What We Do › Health Management Education

“When I graduated from medical school in 1990, I was faced with a difficult choice: work as a physician in a broken, dysfunctional system or become a pioneer in the efforts to change that system from the inside out. I chose the latter and, through my work with AIHA, I have helped assure sustainable, system-wide change in Romania.”

Dana Farcasanu, CEO of the Center for Health Policies and Services in Bucharest, Romania (Bucharest/Chicago, Bucharest/Lexington, and Tirana/Bucharest partnerships)

Building sustainable healthcare capacity is dependent on the availability of skilled administrators who can both manage existing programs and help develop new ones capable of meeting the constantly changing healthcare needs of their communities.

Since its inception in 1992, AIHA’s strategy for advancing health sector reform has included enhancing educational and professional development opportunities for current and prospective administrators, policymakers, and clinicians at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive management levels. Starting with our first hospital-based partnerships in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, we have conducted activities designed to strengthen health administration.

With the assistance of leading US schools of health management and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, we developed workshops on management techniques, financing, and leadership skills for staff at partner institutions. These workshops include a strong “train-the-trainers” component whereby participants are given a sound foundation in selected topics as well as in adult learning principles so they may share their knowledge with other managers in their respective countries. Our early work in this arena formed the basis for our Health Management Education initiative, which was launched in 1995.
