HIV/AIDS Twinning Center
What We Do › HIV/AIDS › HIV/AIDS Twinning Center
Although the concept of twinning has been around for decades, the terminology is relatively new. In its broadest sense, twinning refers to the partnering of two entities with shared characteristics to achieve a common goal. As an international development tool, twinning is flexible, collaborative, and it can lead to concrete and positive changes.
The HIV/AIDS Twinning Center is an AIHA program that creates
peer-to-peer relationships between organizations working to improve services for people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. With support from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), these twinning partnerships establish an effective framework for building sustainable institutional and human-resource capacity through the open exchange of knowledge, information, and professional experience.
The HIV/AIDS Twinning Center has established partnerships that have strengthened health system capacity in 12 countries, including 11 that are situated in sub-Saharan Africa. Many of these institutional twinning partnerships link schools of the health professions to support the development and expansion of sustainable pre- and in-service education and training capacity in disciplines such as general medicine, adult and pediatric urgent care, nursing, clinical pharmacy, medical technology, social work, and mid-level medical healthcare workers like South Africa's clinical associates programs.
