Russia HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Partnerships

What We DoHIV/AIDS › Russia HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment Partnerships

For nearly a decade, Russia has been facing one of fastest growing rates of new HIV infections in the world. With USAID support, AIHA’s HIV/AIDS partnerships helped targeted Russian cities establish effective systems and processes that improve their human and organizational capacity to provide high-quality care and services to people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.

These partnerships also served as an important capacity-building mechanism that helped enable Russia to successfully apply for, and make the best use of, grants from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and other large-scale international donor organizations.

AIHA’s HIV/AIDS partnerships in Russia were launched in 2004 and linked the following Russian and American communities:

Starting in 2006, the Orenburg/New York and St. Petersburg/New Haven partnerships continued their collaboration through AIHA's HIV/AIDS Treatment, Care, and Support Project, which is currently funded by the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through USAID-Russia.

In December that same year, AIHA launched the Volga River AIDS Alliance in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation to continue providing technical assistance and support to Saratov Oblast and the city of Togliatti. This project, which concluded in 2008, was supported by USAID through its Global Development Alliance.
