Medicine is not practiced in a vacuum, although it can often seem that way to healthcare practitioners in the former Soviet Union and other countries in Eastern Europe. Many clinicians are cut off from modern, evidence-based resources simply because they live and work in remote regions. Compounding the problem, decades of isolation from scientific research conducted in other parts of the world have further hindered medical professionals in the region, leading to a severe dearth of capacity when it comes to providing treatment, care, and support to people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
To help fill this void, AIHA launched the EurasiaHealth AIDS Knowledge Network (EAKN) to provide healthcare practitioners, medical educators, scientists, and allied professionals with access to clinical research, tools, and training materials in Russian and other regional languages.
Part of the EurasiaHealth Knowledge Network, a Web-based clearinghouse for translated information and resources on a broad range of health topics, EAKN provides networking and learning opportunities, as well as information on regional HIV/AIDS projects, funding opportunities, and conferences. The site houses hundreds of documents and resources that have been translated into Russian and other Eurasian languages and also features discussion forums and an HIV/AIDS Community Network that links scientists, community activists, government officials, and other experts working on HIV-related projects in the region.
