In many countries spanning the former Soviet Union, cancer was—and to some extent, still is—viewed as a virtual death sentence. Under the old system, physicians were taught not to openly discuss a cancer diagnosis with their patients because it would cause them to become overly fearful of medical care.
AIHA partnerships have long worked to change that paradigm by teaching healthcare providers in recipient countries that patients can play a critical role in their own care if they are viewed as partners in the process and armed with the information they need to make rational, well-informed decisions. These partnerships also introduced new evidence-based models of cancer screening and treatment, as well as patient-centered care and support programs. In many communities overseas, this combination of open communication, customer service, and high-quality care has helped raise the profile of AIHA partner institutions and give hope to patients throughout the region.
