Ukraine Breast Health Program

Reported cases of breast cancer in Ukraine have risen some 70 percent over the past two decades and, with little education about early detection or access to reliable mammography equipment, diagnosis often comes too late.
In response, AIHA launched the Ukraine Breast Health Program with funding from USAID through its cooperative agreements for the healthcare partnership programs and a special earmark for women’s health in Ukraine. The program operated between 1995-1996 at three Women’s Wellness Centers in Kyiv, L’viv, and Odessa.
These centers placed special focus on breast cancer screening and care, offering both clinical services and psycho-social support within the framework of AIHA's client-centered Women's Health model.
AIHA outfitted the centers with mammography machines, ultrasounds, and other necessary equipment and supplies, as well as provided additional training to staff. The result was vastly improved diagnostic and treatment capacity at these centers, which cumulatively provide breast health services to nearly 30,000 women annually (last reported in 2002).
