An unfortunate reality of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic is that young people are often alone, impoverished, and with little hope for the safe and healthy future that is every child’s birthright. Nearly 15 million children under the age of 18 have already lost at least one parent to and every minute of every day four more join their ranks. By 2010, UNICEF predicts that more than 25 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
AIHA’s HIV/AIDS Twinning Center is working to improve conditions for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS through community-based programs, such as a partnership between the Institute of Social Work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and the Jane Addams College of Social Work of the University of Illinois at Chicago. This alliance is partnering to strengthen the Institute’s pre- and in-service training and to develop a case management system that creates a network of social support and assistance for young people affected by HIV/AIDS.
