WASHINGTON, DC, JUNE 22, 2007 — The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) announced today that the country of Georgia presented the President of the Meehan Family Foundation, Mr. Daniel E. Meehan, with the Order of Honor award in recognition of his notable contribution to the development of the Georgian healthcare system and the improvement of service capabilities for Georgian citizens. Mr. Meehan was cited for building a primary healthcare clinical and educational center in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region as well as for “his prolific practical activities.”

The Mtskheta District Family Medicine Clinic and Regional Training Center is the first facility outside the capitol of Tbilisi that housed both a Family Medicine Clinic serving the local population and a Regional Training Center for primary care physicians and nurses countrywide.

Opened in October 2003, the Family Medicine Clinic provides primary care, dental services, and ambulatory specialty services, including a model community hypertension control program proposed for dissemination nationally, for the population of Mtskheta and the surrounding district. Specialty and diagnostic services provided onsite include tuberculosis, oncology, hematology, psychiatry, ENT, ophthalmology and surgical clinics, laboratory and radiology services.

The Regional Training Center is accredited by the Georgian Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, and recognized by the Georgian National Post-Graduate Medical Academy, as well as the World Bank, Europe Aid, and other donor programs for graduate training, retraining, and continuing professional education of physicians and nurses. Topics addressed include a comprehensive family medicine curriculum, with special emphasis on evidence-based medicine and clinical guidelines development, community health, hypertension control and prevention, oral health promotion and dental caries prevention, women’s health, and nutrition.
