USAID-funded partnership program in Georgia continues to expand primary care services available to people in rural communities throughout the region
WASHINGTON, DC, and TBILISI, GEORGIA, October 10, 2006 — The American International Health Alliance (AIHA) is pleased to announce that members of its Guria/La Crosse partnership will conduct a second Community Health Fair at the Ozurgeti District Polyclinic on October 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. The health fair will help raise awareness of key health topics among the people living in Ozurgeti while at the same time introducing them to the wide range of primary care services available at the clinic and community health concepts, including how to take a more proactive approach to their healthcare.
Part of a larger healthcare partnership program in Georgia, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), AIHA’s Guria/La Crosse partnership links the Guria Regional Health Care Department with World Services of La Crosse, Wisconsin. This partnership was formed in April 2004 to improve community-based primary healthcare services in Georgia’s Guria region. Partners will use the health fair as a platform for conducting patient education and outreach activities such as screening for high blood pressure and diabetes; performing routine physical exams; and discussing a wide range of common health problems including hypertension, diabetes, cervical and breast cancer, sexually transmitted infections, child health and development, reproductive health, tuberculosis, and malaria. Lectures and handouts on healthy lifestyle choices and the principles of first aid and CPR will also be presented.
As part of the regional health activity, AIHA and partners will host the Guria Regional Primary Health Care Conference to discuss the Ministry of Health Primary Health Care (PHC) reform strategy and implementation plan, PHC financing principles, Guria regional PHC development, and the community-oriented primary care programs introduced by the partnership to help ensure better public access to high-quality primary care services, particularly in Guria’s rural districts.
In addition to partners from Guria and La Crosse, senior officials from Georgia’s Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, the Guria Regional Administration, and the Ozurgeti District Administration will attend the event, as will representatives of AIHA, USAID, and various local and international organizations working in the region.
Created in 1992 by a consortium of major healthcare provider associations and professional medical education organizations, AIHA establishes and manages twinning partnerships between health-related institutions in the United States and their counterparts in Africa, Asia, Eurasia, and the Caribbean.
