Introduction to Pediatric ART Training
Ust Izhora, Russia

AIHA and the Russia Federal AIDS Center collaborate to provide HIV/AIDS training at the newly created AIDS Training and Education Center (ATEC) in St. Petersburg. The Introduction to Pediatric ART Management course is taught at the clinical site in Ust Izhora. The five-day introductory course for care teams (pediatricians, nurses, social workers).includes the indications for instituting antiretroviral therapy for children living with AIDS, drug administration and monitoring, and the clinical course of the disease.

The purpose of this series of workshops was to introduce representatives of US community- and faith-based organizations (CBOs and FBOs) to the New Partners Initiative (NPI). Through NPI, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will provide grants to new US CBOs and FBOs to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and care services. Twinning Center staff participated in these workshops, introducing participants to the Twinning Center and to the concept of twinning and partnership as it relates to PEPFAR goals and objectives. Over 100 participants from various CBOs and FBOs participated in each workshop.

Principles of Palliative Care for Decision-Makers

In support of the Global Fund-Round 4, AIHA and the Federal AIDS Center of Russia provide training to oblast AIDS Center administrators and chief physicians to increase their understanding of the principles of palliative care and the urgent need to extend support programs to PLWHAs. The four-day training includes international faculty and national faculty from the Federal AIDS Center.

Palliative Care (TOT)

In support of the Global Fund-Round 4, AIHA and the Russia Federal AIDS Center conduct palliative care training-of-trainers to increase the capacity of countries to address treatment and support needs for PLWHAs. The five-day clinical-based training includes symptom management of HIVAIDS; advanced care planning; pain assessment and management; palliative care for children; and providing end of life care. National and international faculty work together to conduct training that provides adult education experiential exercises in addition to clinical course work.

Antenatal Care Dissemination Workshop

The partners from Dartmouth Medical School (Hanover, New Hampshire) and Gjakova conducted a workshop to share their experience in developing antenatal care in the primary care system in the Gjakova Family Medicine Centers. The workshop was cosponsored by the partnership and the Center for the Development of Family Medicine. Participants included primary care physicians, nurses, and administrators from municipalities throughout Kosovo. The partners produced an antenatal care toolkit to serve as a guide for introducing the program in Family Medicine Centers in other municipalities.

HIV/AIDS Lab Control Workshop
Saratov, Russia

The five-day introductory course is intended for laboratory personnel at all levels who are currently performing or supervising testing and laboratory quality assurance. The topics include laboratory quality assurance and quality control; the proper use of personal protective equipment and biologic safety cabinets; specific testing methods for flow cytometry to measure CD4 concentration; hematology testing; chemistry testing; viral load testing; interpretation of the Western Blot assay for HIV antibody; the selection and handling of specimens for analysis; and critical values and issues in the testing and reporting of test results to manage HIV and opportunistic infections including tuberculosis and other opportunistic infections. The material is drawn from WHO, NIH and CDC curriculum and published scientific literature and distilled to provide an intensive but brief overview of essential elements of laboratory practices and procedures important to the effective care and treatment of persons infected with HIV.

Pilot of the NIS Adapted PMTCT Generic Training Packaged for Uzbekistan

A four-day training workshop on PMTCT using a curriculum designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for use in around the globe was attended by faculty representing all the medical institutes of Kazakhstan. The curriculum, adapted for use in Kazakhstan was taught by Kazakh faculty trained to tech the course by international trainers.

Mentoring visits to Pediatric ART Teams

Continued support and mentoring to reinforce training on the clinical management of children with HIV is essential for delivering quality care. Two Pediatric ART faculty - a pediatrician from the Federal Center in Ust-Izhora and a pediatric nurse from the US - provide such mentoring to the pediatric ART team from Togliatti. The Togliatti team was trained in June 2005 at the Regional Knowledge Hub.
 
PMTCT training for Uzbekistan pediatricians at SUAEC
Odessa, Ukraine

Training was held at the South Ukrainian AIDS Education Center (SUAEC) in Odessa for pediatricians from Uzbekistan. The pediatricians will be taught theoretical and practical skills for PMTCT, including: diagnosing and managing pediatric HIV cases; vaccination for babies born to HIV-infected women; monitoring and evaluation of data related to children born to HIV- positive women; and treatment protocols for HIV-positive young patients in day-care institutions and out-patient departments.
 
ART Management Workshop, Global Fund Round 4

The Russia Federation received Global Funds (Round 4). The Russia Federal AIDS Center and AIHA are working together to provide training, curricula, and mentoring on anti-retroviral treatment (ART) for persons with AIDS. AIHA is supporting the participation of two international faculty for the ART management training.
