The Partners

US Partner: The US partner is the University of Kentucky, School of Public Health in Lexington, Kentucky.

NIS Partners: The NIS partners are the First and Second Tashkent State Medical Institutes in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.



Partnership Objectives

The partnership's overall goal is to develop and implement effective health management education (at the undergraduate, graduate/postgraduate and continuing education levels) for the purpose of strengthening of health services management practices and improving health care delivery in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Specific objectives include:

  • Improve the quality of the health management curricula for health professions education at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels.
  • Improve teaching skills of faculty in health management for health professionals at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Increase the availability throughout Uzbekistan of health management training methods and materials developed by the partnership.



Key Events

2002 and 2003

The partnership activities centered on a needs assessment and curriculum development, followed by instructor selection and training. US partners assessed the technological capabilities in Tashkent as they related to the development of the health management program and developed a plan to enhance teaching techniques at the institution and a list of educational material needed to advance the learning process.




Achievements

Health Management

  • The undergraduate health management curriculum was designed, developed and introduced in May.
  • A total of 15 medical institute faculty members and administrators from the two partnering institutes were trained to deliver the new curriculum.
  • In June an initial offering of the course to medical students was made at each of the partner Institutes with a University of Kentucky partner in attendance to assist. The 36 hour block of instruction is currently being taught at both Tashkent Medical Institutes by the trained faculty. In addition to the pre- and post-tests that were administered to measure student learning, instructor/course satisfaction surveys were also administered to students.
