The Partners

US Partners: The US partners consist of Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC Health System, the Family Health Council, Inc. and the University of Pittsburgh--Graduate School of Public Health. Magee-Womens Hospital is one of only five not-for-profit hospitals in the United States dedicated to the care of women and infants.  Affiliated with the UPMC Health system, Magee serves as the teaching facility for obstetrics, gynecology, gynecological oncology, and neonatology for students enrolled in the schools of medicine and nursing, and for allied health professions.  The Family Health Council, Inc. (FHC) provides high quality reproductive and related health care services that are innovative and responsive to the needs of women and their families at more than 70 sites in 23 counties of western Pennsylvania.  FHC addresses a wide variety of women’s health concerns, such as obstetrics and gynecology, breast and cervical cancer screening, STD testing and treatment, nutrition counseling, adoption services, teen pregnancy prevention, HIV prevention, sexuality education for teens, community education, parent education, professional training, and research.  More than 100,000 women and their families utilize the services of FHC annually.  The University of Pittsburgh—Graduate School of Public Health was founded in 1948 and is fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.  The Graduate School of Public Health is considered a leader in the field of women’s health research and is one of the top-ranked schools of public health in the US.

CEE Partners: The Gyor Healthy Cities Project has been part of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Healthy City project since 1989 and was designated as a WHO Healthy City in 1994.  The City of Gyor has developed a Long-term City Development Strategy and a City Health Plan.

Partnership Objectives

The goal of the partnership is to assist the Gyor community to engage local government and community-based organizations in developing and implementing an intervention focused on women’s reproductive health and related education programs.

  • To increase participation by citizens in the area of women’s reproductive healthcare, including participation in a community health advisory board.
  • To identify three women’s health priorities and appropriate intervention strategies through a series of focus groups by July 2003.
  • To increase awareness of and knowledge about women’s reproductive health among targeted, high-risk groups through the development of informational materials and outreach programs over the next 18 months.
  • To establish one central women’s reproductive health resource/education center by September 2003 and up to 4 satellite resource/education information stations (“cupboards”) with appropriate educational and informational materials by January 2004.

Partnership Data

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the partners November 2002 in Gyor, Hungary.

Achievements

Needs Assessment

  • During the first exchange to Gyor, the partners met with a variety of groups and organizations active in the community, including the St. Cyril and Method Foundation (a temporary family housing/shelter), Kossuth Vocational School, the Gypsy (Roma) Minority Advocacy Association, county hospital, Public Health Institute and Primary Health Care Nurse Service, the Family Support and Child Welfare Service Agency, and the Independent Women’s Association of Gyor.
  • A survey was distributed to 60 community members to determine the perceived health needs of women in Gyor. Upon analysis and ranking in a priority matrix, the following health needs were identified: family planning and contraceptive services, breast health, adolescent pregnancy prevention, healthy lifestyle promotion, women’s health survey/needs assessment, smoking cessation and mental health.

Advisory Committee

  • A women’s health advisory committee was established in Gyor to provide guidance to the partnership. The committee held meetings in February and March 2003 to discuss the first exchange to Pittsburgh, the draft workplan, the proposed focus group exercise, suggested target groups and facilitators, and potential sites for the women’s health education/resource centers.

Focus Groups

  • Focus group facilitators and potential groups have been identified by the Gyor partnership coordinator with input from the women’s health advisory committee.  A sociologist and psychologist from the National Drug Prevention Institute in Budapest will conduct the facilitators’ training.
