The Partners

US Partner: Magee Womancare International (MWI) is the lead organization for the Pittsburgh/Donetsk partnership. Collaborators include the Allegheny County Health Department, United Mine Workers of America, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Department of Family Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology. Magee Womancare International, the international humanitarian outreach arm of Magee-Women's Hospital was established to improve health care conditions for women and infants in the former Soviet Union.

NIS Partner: The NIS partners consist of the Donetsk Oblast Health Administration, the Kramatorsk Central City Hospital, and Polyclinic #1 of Donetsk City Hospital #25. Kramatorsk Central City Hospital has both in-patient and out-patient facilities and provides care to 4800 adults and 1300 children annually. Polyclinic #1 of Donetsk City Hospital #25 provides outpatient ambulatory services for 20,600 miners and their families on an annual basis.


Partnership Objectives

The partnership's overall goal is to develop a model community-oriented women's wellness program at Kramatorsk Central City Hospital and a model community-based primary care site at Donetsk City Hospital #25 that provides family-focused services, women's health services, and miner's health services. Specific objectives are to:

  • Obtain consumer input in the development of a combined model primry care center and a Women's Wellness Center (WWC) and disseminate related consumer information to targeted groups through a community awareness campaign, development of educational materials, and strengthening of the community board.
  • Enhance diagnostic screening capabilities by developing protocols.
  • Enhance the clinical capabilities of partners in the prevention, identification and tretment of selected diseases.
  • Expand information management capacity through database development and management and data collection.
  • Develop educational and clinical models to initiate the improvement of women's healthcare and primary healthcare.
  • Improve dianostic testing of selected illnesses and diseases.



Achievements

  Community Health

  • The Donetsk Community Board was established to gain consumer input into the development of the model primary healthcare and women's wellness centers. The Community Board members include not only medical professionals, but also representatives from mining organizations, area schools and businesses, women's organizations and other professional organizations. The members participate in implementing healthy lifestyle and disease prevention campaigns and in fundraising for the model centers.

 

  Occupational and Environmental Health

  • Eight US professionals worked in conjunction with AIHA and the NIS partners to sponsor the Donetsk Public Health Dissemination Conference, June 19 - 21, 2001. The objective of the conference was public health with a focus on environmental, occupational, and women's health.
  • The Miner's Health Center staff from Donetsk City Hospital #25 created a series of ten miner's health brochures focusing on nutrition, hearing loss, alcohol, smoking, and muscular - skeletal disease.

  Primary Care

  • On February 26, 2001, the Miner's Health Center, a model primary health care clinic, serving miners and their families opened in Donetsk at City Hospital #25. In addition to primary care services, this clinic offers a comprehensive range of occupational health services for miners and has a strong women's health component. A second primary health care clinic opened in Donetsk on July 11, 2002. The newly opened clinic focuses on screening and early detection of diseases, disease prevention and health promotion.

  Women's Health

  • A Women's Wellness Center (WWC) was opened at the Kramatorsk Central City Hospital on February 27, 2001. The WWC developed classes focusing on topics such as childbirth education, Lamaze training for expectant parenets, preparation for delivery, adolescent health, and breast health.
  • Staff from the Miner's Health Center at Donetsk City Hospital #25 developed six brochures focusing on women's health issues: osteoporosis, HIV, adolescent health, breast self-examination, hygiene, sexuality and puberty, and contraception.
  • The Kramatorsk Women's Wellness Center hosted a four-day Childbirth Education Workshop for AIHA partners from Moldova and Ukraine, October 29 - November 1, 2002. The workshop introduced the most successful childbirth practices, teaching tools and materials to its participants.
  • A Women's Wellness Center opened at Donetsk City Hospital #25 on November 15, 2002. Built through the collaborative efforts of the Donetsk Oblast Health Administration and three coal mines in the catchment area, the center offers comprehensive healthcare services for women.

  Practice Guidelines

  • Partners from Magee Women's Hospital and Donetsk City Hospital #25 developed four clinical practice guidelines. Three of them, Health Lifestyles during Menopause, Pneumonia and Peptic Ulcer, have been reviewed adn approved for publication by AIHA's region-wide CPG advisory committee.

  Community Health

  • The Kramatorsk WWC established a training program for young adults to be peer educators on such topics as substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention.
